Michael initially looked to science as a career path having obtained a BSc (HONS) degree in Chemistry from UMIST in 1990. He however felt that the cut and thrust of litigation was more his yearning having initially started at Lovells, Hong Kong, working on a large construction arbitration dispute during 1990 – 1991. He returned to the United Kingdom and indeed changed career paths and completed the CPE, LSF and formally qualified as a solicitor in September 1995. His ambition and adversarial skills in litigation quickly made him rise from an assistant solicitor to partnership in 1998 and equity partner status by 2001.
In 2003 he however considered that a new practice with his core values of tough strategic advice, but bearing in mind the economics of an action could carve a niche in the industry and thus provide a better legal service to not only existing clients but also potential new ones. Never one to rest on his laurels, his ambition and confidence have helped push this practice to what it is now acting for numerous multinational companies, banks and high net worth individuals.
His own areas of expertise are commercial litigation, insurance litigation, matrimonial and catastrophic personal injury.
When not working, he makes time for charitable causes and strives to make Chinese culture and links in the United Kingdom more prominent. He raised that bar with the advent of the London Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival which he chaired and helped set up in his year as president of the China Town Lions Club with the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office in 2007 and 2008 respectively. This event is now a major annual highlight in the UK Chinese calendar and funds raised go to many needy causes.
