Tier 1 Investor

 

The Tier 1 (Investor) visa category of the Point-Based System caters to High Net Worth Individuals who wish to make substantial financial investments here in the UK.


To qualify for the initial leave, applicants must score at least 75 points for attributes (Appendix A of the Immigration Rules).

 

In particular:

  • You must have money of your own amounting to not less than £2 million and entirely in your control. The money must be held in a regulated financial institution, such as a bank or building society and must be disposable in the UK.

  • You must also have opened an account with a UK regulated financial institution for the purposes of investing not less than £2 million in the UK. 

 

Key points under this visa route:

  • You are not required to demonstrate knowledge of the English language or satisfy the maintenance requirement;

  • You must be at least 18 years old;

  • The money you are planning to invest must belong to you and/or your spouse/partner;

  • If applying for the initial leave on or after 29 March 2019, the money you are planning to invest must have been held for 2 years before the date of application;

  • No investments in UK Government Bonds will be considered from 29 March 2019;

  • The investments must be made within 3 months of your entry into the UK or of the date of the grant for leave to remain within the UK under the Tier 1 (Investor) route (unless the investments were made within the 12 months before the date of an initial application);

  • Your family members can join you in the UK as your dependents;

  • Upon successful application, your visa will be granted for a period of 3 years and 4 months with the possibility of an extension for a further 2-year period;

  • Having lawfully spent 5 years in the UK, you and your family members will be eligible for indefinite leave to remain (“ILR”) in the UK and subsequently for a British passport;

  • You and your family members can work/study in the UK without any immigration restrictions;

  • If you invest £10 million, you could qualify for settlement upon having spent two years in the United Kingdom; and

  • Similarly, if you invest £5 million, you could qualify for indefinite leave to remain after three years.


Applicants who had their Tier 1 (Investor) visas granted under the rules in place before 6 November 2014 (where the invested funds equal or exceed £1 million), can only extend their visas until 6 April 2020 and/or apply for settlement until 6 April 2022.

 

Applicants who have invested their funds in UK Government Bonds, are able to extend their investor visas by 6 April 2023 and/or apply for settlement by 6 April 2025.
